While working on a <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.myexcelonline.com\/meo-staging\/blog\/top-excel-formulas-function-examples-to-get-better-at-microsoft-excel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"formula\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\">formula<\/a> in Excel, the <strong>text should be written in quotes<\/strong> for Excel to recognize it as text.<\/p>\n<p>Excel is by default programmed to <strong>accept cell references as the arguments for its <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.myexcelonline.com\/meo-staging\/blog\/top-excel-formulas-function-examples-to-get-better-at-microsoft-excel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"formulas\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\">formulas<\/a><\/strong>, and inserting t<strong>exts without quotation marks will return an error<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myexcelonline.com\/meo-staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Text-formula-error-1.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Not using Quotation Marks for Text in Formulas\"  class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-24665\" src=\"https:\/\/www.myexcelonline.com\/meo-staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Text-formula-error-1.png\" alt=\"Not using Quotation Marks for Text in Formulas\" width=\"695\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.myexcelonline.com\/meo-staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Text-formula-error-1.png 695w, https:\/\/www.myexcelonline.com\/meo-staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Text-formula-error-1-300x156.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 695px) 100vw, 695px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Let us understand this issue better with an example!<\/p>\n<p>Taking the <strong>concatenate<\/strong> formula, its primary function <strong>would be to join two or more text strings together.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>=CONCATENATE(Email ID of,A7,&#8221; is &#8220;,B7)<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myexcelonline.com\/meo-staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Text-formula-error-2.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Not using Quotation Marks for Text in Formulas\"  class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-24666\" src=\"https:\/\/www.myexcelonline.com\/meo-staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Text-formula-error-2.png\" alt=\"Not using Quotation Marks for Text in Formulas\" width=\"701\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.myexcelonline.com\/meo-staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Text-formula-error-2.png 701w, https:\/\/www.myexcelonline.com\/meo-staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Text-formula-error-2-300x165.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 701px) 100vw, 701px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As you can see, we have entered a couple of<strong> text strings as the concatenate formula&#8217;s argument<\/strong>, but Excel is returning the value as an error.<\/p>\n<p>This is because the t<strong>ext strings (i.e. Email ID of) that we have entered are not in quotation marks<\/strong>, and hence Excel is u<strong>nable to comprehend the values given as arguments<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Even though concatenate is a function largely used to combine text strings, Excel is<strong> unable to identify text<\/strong> unless:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#lesson1\"><strong>Cell reference is used<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#lesson2\"><strong>Text itself is within quotation marks<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let&#8217;s try this formula again in the <strong>correct way!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t forget to download this Excel Workbook to follow along:<\/p>\n<div class=\"after-post-box\">\n<p class=\"line-two\"><a class=\"IRPP_minimalist icon-download\" href=\"https:\/\/www.myexcelonline.com\/meo-staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Quotation-marks.xlsx\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"ctaText px-3 text-capitalize\"><strong> download excel workbook<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"postTitle px-3\">Quotation-marks.xlsx<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong><a id=\"lesson1\"><\/a><span style=\"color: #339966;\">Using Cell References<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Here we will use the <strong>same concatenate function by given cell references<\/strong> that contain the texts we want to join.<\/p>\n<p>As you can see, the cells <strong>B6 and C6 contain the text we want to join<\/strong>. To do this, we just have to add &#8221; &#8221; in-between the text references to add a space in between.<\/p>\n<p>And, Voila. These<strong> same text strings returned an error when we used them without quotation marks.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Similarly, here we can <strong>also add spaces in between in-text<\/strong> as explained above.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When writing formulas, <strong>Excel will identify a text only if it&#8217;s written within quotation marks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Excel <strong>extracts anything written within the quotation mark as text<\/strong> and <strong>discards the quotation mark<\/strong>.
